Apple has voided warranties and refused to carry out repairs on computers exposed to cigarette smoke, according to claims on a US consumer website. Is it time you quit for the sake of your laptop?

The case follows a similar report of Apple refusing to service an iMac due to “health risks of secondhand smoke”.
I'm calling shananigans on this one.

If these tales are true, and if the damage claimed by the Apple techs is pervasive as they claim then isn't this proof that the Apple products just aren't designed as well as their competitors that don't fail like this?
If their product fails when exposed to a condition that their competitors don't fail when exposed to the Mac doesn't "just work" as well then.
I ask this as a former smoker who still owns three laptops 3, 5, and 6 years old. All were exposed to not only cigarette smoke but two of them spent 6 months and 12 months in the Iraqi desert (one in no more a protective environment than a tent). No components on any of these laptops have failed.

Ya, exactly. From my own experience being a smoker, who used to smoke inside, and my techie friends who still do smoke inside, surrounded by electronics, this sounds like a piss poor excuse to void a warranty. Besides, the "health risks of secondhand smoke” argument is completely unsupportable. I didn't realize that Apple was now part of the enforcement arm of the FDA... I have a feeling that, with this publicity, they will back off their position on this. Not to mention, I am sure that this (former) customer will be able to file a successful suit for breach of warranty/contract.
